Who was B.K.S. Iyengar®?

B.K.S. Iyengar®

Sri B.K.S. Iyengar® was born in 1918 in Bellur in south India, and died on August 20th 2014. His master Sri T. Krishnamacharya sent him in 1937 to teach at Pune in the Maharashtra region. He is still based there, and has created the Ramamani Memorial Iyengar® Yoga Institute inaugurated in 1975. Geeta and Prashant, two of his six children, now teach the courses at the Institute. He teaches that it is possible to reconcile modern life, family life and a spiritual quest. He is the author of many books among which the " Yoga dipika - Light on Yoga " is a best seller. Translated into 18 languages, this book is considered as the most complete text on the practice of Yoga. B.K.S. Iyengar® proposes a simple, rigorous technique, improved by himself throughout his life, and able to respond to the needs of contemporary existence. He defines yoga as at the same time an art, a science and a philosophy.

He has designed a system of props enabling to practice yoga in good conditions even in the face of difficulties. Indeed, one of the many facets of his method is the therapeutic use of yoga, which requires a precise learning under the guidance of a certified teacher. His teaching insists on the precision and correctness of alignments in postures, so as to train the mind to invest itself in the correct action, contributing to our evolution to a state of unity of body and spirit.

Bellur, natal village of B.K.S Iyengar®
The humanitarian actions of BKS Iyengar® are financed by the gifts of millions of yoga followers across the world. The goal is to help his native village, Bellur, out of a state of deprived rural existence. By building a water tower to bring tap water to houses, a school and a college so that the youth can be educated, a temple so that traditional culture can stay alive, be disseminated, and continue to educate the adult population, BKS Iyengar® wished to make it a model village. It is an example for other initiatives, so that his country can be modernised without losing its culture which is so deep, and contribute also to the spiritual evolution of mankind.
